Program

The 12-credit-hour Post-Master’s Graduate Certificate in University and College Teaching will prepare graduate students, postdoctoral scholars, current faculty, and others with the skills needed for the full range of faculty responsibilities at a range of institutions of higher education.  This program provides an understanding of the issues facing American college students through an exploration of student development theories and an examination of the relationship between the college environment and student engagement and success.

Students can expect to learn:

  • Develop concrete skills in teaching.
  • Apply effective instructional design, adult learning principles, curriculum models and delivery formats to create engaging learning experiences.
  • Analyze, design, develop, and evaluate online learning including preparing online students, facilitating, fostering a sense of community, and administering online instruction.

The program is 100% online and designed to be flexible for working professionals hoping to continue their education.

Admissions

Application Deadlines: 

  • August 1 (fall)
  • December 1 (spring)
  • May 1 (summer first half term)
  • June 15 (summer second half term)

Admissions & Requirements: 

  • Complete the Graduate School Admission Application.
  • A Master’s degree from an US Department of Education-recognized institutional accreditor or pursuing a doctoral degree.
  • All previous work beyond high school documenting an overall grade point average of at least 2.75 (based on a 4.0 scale).
  • Copies of unofficial transcripts from all academic coursework beyond high school.
  • A statement of purpose.
Courses

This program is currently offered 100% online. Some courses can be taken face-to-face, but will not be eligible for the distance education rate of tuition.  In addition to earning the certificate, these courses may also be counted as electives towards your doctoral degree (discuss this option with your doctoral advisor prior to enrolling).

  • ADMN 8171: The American College Student (3)
  • ADMN 8695: Advanced Seminar in Teaching and Learning (3)
  • ELDT 8150: Design, Development, and Evaluation of Online Learning Systems (3) (This course was previously prefixed EIST 8150)
  • GRAD 8201: Teaching at the University Level (3) or EDCI 8681: Seminar in College Teaching (3)
