Are you a passionate educator ready to take your foreign language teaching career to the next level? UNC Charlotte's Master of Arts in Teaching (M.A.T.) in Foreign Language Education program is designed specifically for individuals who have already completed the Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12) at UNC Charlotte.

Our unique two-phase program:

  • Phase I: Earn your Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12) and gain practical classroom experience through a student teaching internship.
  • Phase II: Deepen your knowledge and skills with advanced master's-level coursework in teacher leadership, research, and innovative methodologies.

Program Outcomes

Upon completion of the program, you will:

  • Earn your M.A.T. degree and qualify for the advanced Standard Professional II teaching license.
  • Be prepared to teach foreign languages in grades K-12 with excellence.
  • Gain in-demand skills aligned with the ACTFL standards for foreign language teacher training.

Admissions

Application Deadlines: 
This program offers Fall, Spring, and Summer admission on a rolling basis. Priority application deadlines are:

  • August 1 (fall)
  • December 1 (spring)
  • May 1 (summer first half term)
  • June 15 (summer second half term)

Admissions & Requirements:

  • Complete the Graduate School Admission Application.
  • Completion of UNC Charlotte’s Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12).
  • A minimum graduate GPA of 3.5 in the Graduate Certificate in Teaching Foreign Language Education (K-12).
    • Students with a GPA below 3.5 in the Graduate Certificate phase may be considered for admission to the M.A.T. program with scores above the 30th percentile on either the GRE or Miller Analogies Test.
  • Copies of unofficial transcripts from all academic coursework beyond high school.
  • Official TOEFL, IELTS, or Duolingo scores if the applicant’s native language is not English.
  • One recommendation from a full-time faculty member who has taught you in the Graduate Certificate in Teaching in Foreign Language Education. Applicants will provide reference contact names and email addresses through the application portal.
  • A statement of purpose.
Courses

All coursework to complete the M.A.T. must be completed in a six-year time frame, beginning with the first course taken in the Graduate Certificate Program.

  • MDSK 6220: Adolescence and Learning

Methods Courses:

  • FLED 6200: Advanced Methods of Teaching Foreign Languages

Customized Courses: 
Select one of the following:

  • TESL 6206: Globalization, Communities, and Schools
  • or RSCH 6101: Research Methods

Final Courses to be Taken in Phase II:

  • MDSK 6260: Teacher Leadership
  • MDSK 6691: Seminar in Professional Development
