Tuition Classifications

 

Resident

  • Resident A person who has established legal residence (domicile) in North Carolina and maintained that legal residence for at least 12 months (365 days) immediately prior to his or her classification as a resident for in-state tuition and state financial aid eligibility purposes.

Out of NC Non-Resident

  • Are determined to be a non-resident of North Carolina by RDS
  • Are admitted to and exclusively enrolled in an approved DE 100% online program
  • Reside outside of the state of North Carolina

 

Non-Resident

  • A person who has not established legal residence (domicile) in North Carolina, or who has not maintained that legal residence for at least 12 months immediately prior to requesting a residency classification. Non-Residents are not eligible for in-state tuition or for state financial aid.

Residency is determined through the North Carolina Residency Determination Service. Students need only contact RDS if they are seeking to be designated as a North Carolina resident for tuition purposes, otherwise their status defaults to Non-resident.

Out of NC Non-Resident Qualifications:

To automatically qualify for the Out of NC Non-Resident DE Tuition Rate all three of the following must be true and verifiable in the UNC Charlotte student information system.

  1. They are determined to be a non-resident by RDS.
  2. They are admitted to and exclusively enrolled in courses that are part of a 100% online, approved DE program.
  3. They reside outside of the state of North Carolina.

The review of eligibility for this tuition rate is conducted for each semester of a student’s enrollment. 

Out of NC Non-Resident Appeal Information

  • Residency status is determined solely by the North Carolina Residency Determination Services (RDS) Office. All requests for residency reconsideration must be submitted to RDS.
  • Students must be admitted to and exclusively enrolled in courses that are part of a 100% online, approved DE program.
  • Determination of where a student resides is initially done using location information submitted by the student and contained in the University’s student information system. The Out of NC Non-Resident DE tuition appeal process is designed for students who believe their automatic assessment of eligibility for this tuition rate is incorrect.
  • Appeals for current semester tuition and fees must be submitted by 5pm on the posted census date. The census date is posted on the official Academic calendar.
