Important Changes for Professional Licensure Programs

Categories: Newsletter Tags: Fall 2024

Effective July 1, 2024, the U.S. Department of Education has implemented new regulations that significantly impact professional licensure programs at UNC Charlotte. These changes aim to ensure that students can qualify for licensure or certification exams in their chosen states after graduation. Understanding these changes is crucial to maintaining compliance and supporting our students effectively. Here are the highlights:

Programs can only enroll students from states where the program meets the educational requirements for licensure. This compliance is mandated by 34 CFR §668.14(b)(32)(ii) to ensure that students can take necessary licensure or certification exams after completing their programs.

The state where a student will seek licensure post-graduation will be stored in Banner as a Future Professional Licensure Location (PL address). Students’ eligibility to enroll in a professional licensure program will be based on this value which is set by policy but can be changed by students at any time through a process called “attestation.” The University will also use the PL address to notify students if their program’s ability to satisfy licensure requirements in their states ever changes.

For each professional licensure program, UNC Charlotte publishes a list of states where the program meets and does not meet the educational requirements for licensure.  Access the Inventory of Professional Licensure Programs here

Further information and resources related to this change can be found on the Professional Licensure website or by contacting any member of the Out-of-State Academic Activity Coordinating Council (OoSAACC), the team overseeing compliance in this matter.
