CTL Welcomes Faculty to a New Year with Teaching Innovation, AI, and More

CTL Celebrates 25 Years!

The Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) warmly welcomes faculty back to campus this Fall! This year marks a special milestone as they celebrate 25 years of dedication to teaching excellence and student success. Save the date for the CTL 25th Anniversary celebration on November 1, 2025, from 3:00 to 5:00 PM at the Kennedy Building.

Teaching Innovation Workshops to Reach Your Teaching Goal

All faculty and instructional staff are invited to participate in start-of-the-semester workshops on high-impact and innovative teaching strategies to support student success. Learn more about GenAI, syllabus strategies, active learning, Canvas videos, quizzing, assignments, gradebook, learning analytics, and more. Additional workshop dates are available for through December.

AI Across the Curriculum

The CTL features an array of AI Across the Curriculum resources including faculty development workshops, online teaching guides, and toolkits and online resources. Workshops on GenAI showcase introduction and application topics that focus on effective teaching strategies with ChatGPT and MS Copilot, syllabus guidelines, ethical considerations, and classroom communication. CTL will be accepting applications for a new faculty fellow on GenAI beginning September 1st.

ICYMI: 2024 AI Institute

Over 250 UNC Charlotte faculty, staff, students, administrators, and industry partners convened at the Dubois Center for the 2nd Annual Charlotte AI Institute for Smarter Learning, pushing the boundaries on how Al can help students’ critical thinking and creative pursuits. Over 33 faculty and academic staff presented their best work on integrating or supporting AI in the curriculum. A student panel was highlighted in the program, and they stressed how the future of learning will be more personalized and tailored to each individual’s needs. We look forward to the third AI institute in May 2025!

Apply for a SOTL Grant on Curriculum Innovation and AI

Apply for a Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) grant, due October 1st. Call for proposals highlight three major strands: (1) High Impact Practices and Curricular Innovation; (2) Educational Technology Innovation, and (3) Pedagogies using AI.  New faculty SOTL scholars can attend an orientation or enroll in a SOTL grant proposal writing course.

Award for Excellence in Online and Blended Support

The “NinerLink Project” received the 2024 Online Learning Consortium (OLC) INNOVATE Excellence in Online and Blended Student Support Award for advancing student journeys with the first AI-powered virtual student community for Biology at UNC Charlotte utilizing the Inscribe platform. The project team comprises members from the Center for Teaching and Learning and faculty members Sam and Tonya from the Biological Sciences department: Heidi Echols, Jordan Register, Kiran Budhrani, Samantha Suptela, Tonya C. Bates.
